BAAR, Switzerland – (BUSINESS WIRE) – Blackstone Resources AG (SWX: BLS) is pleased to announce that it has passed a number of key milestones for its proprietary 3D printing production technology. These milestones focus on solid-state battery printing and represent a major breakthrough for this next-generation technology.
The company can now proudly announce that its German subsidiary Blackstone Technology GmbH has successfully printed and tested its first working solid-state battery cell. The picture below shows an LED light fed by Blackstone’s solid-state cell.
This marks the successful completion of the research and evaluation phase of the 3D screen printing process as a new flexible method for manufacturing all types of printed solid-state lithium-ion batteries.
The following three important proof-of-concepts were achieved:
The completion of a 3D-printed and mechanically stable solid electrolyte as a separator.
Production of a printable composite cathode (plus composite of solid electrolyte and lithium iron phosphate)
The complete printing process for a 5 × 5 cm bag cell as a functioning demonstrator without mechanical spacers.
Blackstone Technology’s 3D printing and solid state battery technologies offer significant advantages over traditional battery cell designs that use liquid electrolytes. It enables significantly lower costs during production, increases the energy density of the cells and offers a higher number of charging cycles.
With this step Blackstone Technology has achieved the highest efficiency and the greatest leverage of its production technology. It’s a game changer for the entire cell manufacturing process in the world. It also paves the way for mass production of solid state batteries using various cathode materials.
The automotive industry, marine applications, and any other application that requires batteries will benefit greatly from the benefits that solid-state cells 3D printed can offer. Our 3D printed solid state batteries are more environmentally friendly as they are made in water soluble chemicals which are also less polluting and easier to recycle.
Blackstone Technology’s is committed to taking the next steps in developing the manufacturing technology necessary to bring production to the point where one battery cell is produced per second and production costs fall below $ 65 per kWh.
In addition, the production process offers the potential to save up to 70% of traditional investments and 30% Opex in the manufacture of these solid-state cells. Additional material savings can be achieved for the electrode chemistry and other materials used.
