Danimer Scientific Receives A Grant From The United Soybean Board To Expand Research On High-Oleic Soybean Oil In The Production Of Biodegradable Plastic
BAINBRIDGE, Ga .– (BUSINESS WIRE[United Soybean Board expands its valuation of soybean oil with high oleic acid content (HOSO) as a raw material for the production of polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA), a sustainable biopolymer that serves as a biodegradable alternative to conventional plastic.
The grant marks the continuation of Danimer’s collaboration with the United Soybean Board after successfully completing a year-long project to develop a practical model for using HOSO as a raw material in the manufacture of Nodax®, Danimer’s signature PHA used to make a wide a variety of products including straws, bottles and flexible film packaging. The second year of the project will focus on expanding the use of HOSO on a commercial scale.
“HOSO is a readily available material in the United States, making it likely a viable and inexpensive raw material for the production of Nodax®,” said Phil Van Trump, Danimer’s chief science and technology officer. “We are excited about the results of our first year of working with the United Soybean Board and thank them for their continued partnership in finding sustainable ways to meet the growing demand for biodegradable products.”
High oleic soybeans are grown exclusively in the United States, and the oil obtained from the harvest offers increased functionality and improved shelf life for food and manufacturing applications.
“The first year of our research has produced excellent results showing that HOSO is a viable raw material for the manufacture of Nodax®,” said Carol Leggett, PhD, director of microbiology at Danimer. “As we continue to expand commercial production of Nodax®, HOSO is expected to be a valuable tool in strengthening our supply chain and bottom line. The progress we’ve made so far would not have been possible without the collaboration of Omni Tech International, SmithBucklin, the United Soybean Board and their farmers. ”
“Our 78 volunteer farmer directors work on behalf of all soybean growers to get the maximum value on their investments and to increase the preference for US soybeans, Ed Lammers.
