Eclipse International presents Nemo ™ Bed in Box brand, made from 100% recycled plastic from the Ocean Clean Up Project
Eclipse International recently announced the launch of its Nemo ™ brand, which consists of a premium mattress, pillows, mattress topper and accessories for the top of the bed. The line is made from 100 percent polyester, which is made from recycled plastic bottles collected as part of the Ocean Cleanup Project.
The Nemo ™ merchandising strategy includes a bricks and clicks component. Eclipse will split the nation into multiple regions and will be reaching out to the top retailers in each of those regions to act as Eclipse partners, put the beds on their floors and share the cost of marketing the program.
“This is a completely new approach to box bed sales, unlike anything the industry has seen before,” said Stuart Carlitz, CEO of Eclipse International. “We are giving selected retail partners joint ownership of the Nemo ™ brand while enabling them to seize a unique, elaborate opportunity within the sustainable luxury space. Nemo ™ will be the first box bed brand owned by brick and mortar retailers and the manufacturer. “
Nemo ™ is sold under the Eclipse nameplate in the US and is currently sold in the UK under the Millbrook Beds label. To promote the collection, Eclipse will run a media campaign that will include advertising on print, digital, social media and phone app platforms. The company will also set up a separate website for the brand and make POS materials available to its retail partners. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of the mattresses will be donated to The Ocean Cleanup Project.
“The Nemo ™ program will position our company as part of solving one of the most serious environmental problems we face today,” said Carlitz. “Plastic bottles thrown away in the ocean are a major source of pollution. With Nemo ™, however, we can take good advantage of these bottles to engineer high quality bedding that retailers can compete with foam-filled and bed-ridden bed-a-box mattress brands. Given that the petrochemicals’ price hikes have been so volatile recently, this is the perfect environmentally friendly solution to the raw material shortage in the bedding industry. “
Eclipse sources its various types of polyester materials from bottles collected by the Ocean Cleanup Project, a nonprofit that has developed technology to rid the world’s oceans of discarded plastic. To make the cover for each mattress, the bottles are converted into pellets, which are then spun into the yarn that is woven into the fabric. For the filling, these pellets are spun into fibers, which are then mixed into pads.
Each mattress consists of a top comfort layer made from polyester fabric type A, a breathable middle layer made from polyester fabric type B and a supportive base layer made from polyester fabric type C. In addition, each mattress has specially designed sides that improve the breathability of the bed by allowing air to pass through Let the mattress flow.
These mattresses can be rolled into 100 percent recycled plastic packaging for easy delivery. The packaging can be recycled using standard household recycling bins. Once at the end of their life cycle, the mattresses can be completely deconstructed, washed according to National Health Service (NHS) standards, and then recycled for loft insulation. This makes them the only mattresses that are designed for recycling at the end of life, according to Carlitz.
Due to the current shortage of polyurethane, Eclipse will begin using the recycled polyester materials from the Ocean Cleanup Project as a support layer for several of its current flat-pack innerspring mattresses.
