How does 3D printing work?

Many of us have heard of 3D printing and may have seen some things printed on the internet, but we may not all understand how the technology works.

3D printers use computer aided design (CAD). This program can be used to create three-dimensional objects using an overlay method. In 3D printing, materials like plastic, composites, or even biomaterials are layered to create the objects. The objects can be made in different sizes, stiffnesses, colors and even shapes.

How does it all work? 3D printers work just like traditional inkjet printers, except that instead of printing ink on a piece of paper, you 3D print the object you design in your program. 3D printing uses a combination of world-class software, powdery materials, and precision tools to create a three-dimensional object from scratch.

You don’t have to wait for something to dry. After printing, all that’s left to do is sand the edges to make sure it’s smooth and your object is ready to use.

Automakers like Mini have made it clear that they want to use 3D printing so their customers can design unique parts for their cars.

Wheels had an interview with Florian Nissl, project manager for mini exterior design, in Australia. Here’s what he had to say to give customers the opportunity to design certain parts for their cars to make them more unique:

“It’s also a small change in mindset for us because, for the first time, with this 3D printing we’re giving the customer the opportunity to create a piece of the car that we didn’t design. So so far we sort of having created a car for the customer, and now, although the technology we have so far is limited, the customer can do things that I, as a designer, might not do. “

He continued:

“Maybe I don’t like that. But is my opinion really important in this case? I don’t think so because my tastes aren’t necessarily better than others’ so I think it’s a good option. And I can’t give you an exact forecast [of when this is likely to happen], but it would be good if something like that happened more. Wheels are a good example I think. “

How much does it cost to 3D print a car?


There is no exact price for how much it will cost to have a car 3D printed. It has been estimated that a car can cost anywhere from 7,500.00 to thousands more depending on the type of car you want to 3D print and the amount of material used.

With that said, it costs a few hundred dollars to 3D print small custom parts, which is cheaper than buying from a garage.
