The Precious Plastic Lab in Lakes Area is hosting several events this summer where residents can learn more about plastic waste and do practical recycling and art! The Lakes Area Precious Plastic Lab is a plastic recycling makerspace in the Otter Tail County Recycling Center that was launched last year thanks to a Changemaker grant from the West Central Initiative. The laboratory has a shredder, compression oven, injection molding machine, and molds, as well as an extrusion machine that can be used to recycle plastic waste into objects such as bowls, tiles, letters, or art.
Precious Plastic is a global community of recycling innovators who provide open source designs for machines that can turn ordinary plastic waste into useful products and art. Communities around the world have Precious Plastic workshops where they collect plastic, shred plastic, and make products from recycled plastic. Precious Plastic’s goal is to get people to see plastic as the “precious” resource it is, rather than as a disposable item, by making durable and beautiful items from waste plastic.
There are several ways to try out this unique and exciting new project this summer! Learn how to injection mold a recycled plastic tile at pop-up events at the Springboard for the Arts and New York Mills Cultural Center. Artists from various fields have created art and other objects in the Precious Plastic Lab, which will be on view on August 10 at the first public open day.
