Saudi Basic Industries: SABIC is an industry pioneer in introducing its portfolio of recycled ocean-bound plastics

SABIC, a global leader in the chemical industry, has announced the launch of a new recycled material made from ocean-bound plastic obtained from ocean-feeding waterways and inland areas within 50 kilometers of the ocean. The ocean-bound material is mechanically recycled and converted into components for new consumer goods and electronics applications such as TV remote controls and electronic razors. It has the potential to be used in other sectors such as the automotive industry in the future.

As part of the TRUCIRCLE ™ portfolio and services from SABIC, the new recycled material is a XENOY ™ PC / PET compound consisting of at least 10% recycled ocean-bound PET blended with polycarbonate.

According to an internal SABIC LCA study based on resin quality with 20% recycled content, for every 1 kT of product containing the ocean-bound recycled XENOY ™ PC / PET compound, the equivalent of 24 million disposable 0.5- Liter PET water bottles used are being diverted from our oceans to prevent them from becoming marine litter.

The new material, which is part of SABIC’s range of engineering thermoplastics (ETP), offers a potentially significant reduction in carbon footprint of up to 7% and energy consumption of up to 11% compared to its virgin material. It has good impact resistance, processability and chemical resistance.

“Our new recycled ocean-bound material can help address the problem head on as part of our commitment to minimizing plastic waste,” said Sergi Monros, vice president of performance polymers and industrial solutions for petrochemicals, SABIC. “By creating more sustainable materials and creating new collaborations, we aim to help reshape our industry and our entire value chain, while at the same time playing a leading role in providing guidance on the necessary regulation and governance.”

“We are proud that we have succeeded in designing material on the basis of recycled ocean-bound PET in such a way that it meets the high performance requirements of our customers in combination with very good processability”, continues Monros.

The new recycled ocean-bound material is part of the TRUCIRCLE ™ portfolio and services from SABIC, which showcases the company’s circular innovations and can help provide our customers with access to more sustainable materials. In this way, SABIC wants to give the end consumer more confidence in purchasing products, knowing that the material has been recycled and manufactured in a way that can help protect our planet.

The TRUCIRCLE ™ portfolio includes design for recyclability, mechanically recycled products, certified circular products from raw material recycling of used plastic, certified renewable products from bio-based raw materials and closed-loop initiatives to recycle plastic back into high-value applications and prevent valuable used plastics Become wasteful.
