Summer camp of the USM Eagle Maker Hub: From 3D printing to hackability to cybersecurity activities

The University of Southern Mississippi’s Eagle Maker Hub Summer Camp will return with unique 3D printing activities and a hackability camp, with an emphasis on GenCyber’s cybersecurity. The program consists of six two-day camps from June 1st to July 1st. The camps are carried out in person or hybrid-virtual, depending on the preference for the camp delivery.
Eagle Maker Hub is the first public makerspace at a Mississippi university to provide access to digital manufacturing, rapid prototyping, and coding tools. Eagle Maker Hub is known for developing new ways to inspire learning in traditional subjects using the latest manufacturing technology. The main goal of Eagle Maker Hub is to put this technology in the hands of all students and teachers to shape future generations.
“Each two-day camp has a unique focus: campers engage in activities like making their own 3D printer to fix broken items and making them their own invention,” said Anna Wan, director of Eagle Maker Hub and professor of Mathematics. “The students go home from our camps with something they have built themselves with high-tech equipment.”
A separate registration fee is required for each camp, with the exception of the Hackability.camp. The latter is funded by the National Science Foundation and the National Security Agency’s GenCyber program. This is a free camp for students who use wheelchairs and are interested in technology. This dormitory experience has shifted to hybrid virtual for students who want to participate virtually, but in person for students who want to participate.
“The residential camp is focused on cybersecurity this year, so these concepts will be explored in a fun camp environment,” said Wan. “As we become increasingly reliant on cyber-based technology, it is vital to the future of our country’s national and economic security to ensure that enough young people are inspired to use their cybersecurity talents.”
This one-month camp offer is exclusively for elementary school, middle school and high school students. Students will explore the revolutionary technology and give them the opportunity to become inventors and learn about 3D modeling and printing, robotics, coding and design.
