UFlex partners with Hoffer Plastics, Mespack, to bring recyclable monopolymer bags to the market

UFlex has partnered with Mespack, an international manufacturer of flexible packaging, end-of-line and soluble capsules for consumer goods companies serving the world’s leading brands, and Hoffer Plastics, an industry leader and innovator in the custom injection molding industry. Develop a sustainable solution that eases the complexities of recycling associated with hot fill bags.

In order to tackle the problem of bags being completely recyclable, the three titans have jointly developed a turnkey solution that, with its new monopolymer structure, not only enables hot-fill bags to be 100 percent recyclable, but also the spout caps, bringing many ecologically responsible brands closer to one another to achieve their sustainability goals.

Typically, hot fill bags are used to package ready-to-eat food segments, which allow sterile packaging of a range of fresh, cooked or semi-cooked foods, juices and beverages and are used as an alternative to traditional industrial canning methods. The benefits of hot fill bags have exceeded consumer expectations due to the functionality of easy storage and direct consumption of the food contents after heating in the package itself.

The newly developed, recyclable, PP-based hot fill bag made from a single material combines the strength of the layered OPP and CPP laminate structure developed by UFlex and offers improved barrier properties, easy heat sealability and longer shelf life for unrefrigerated food storage; sealed with patented closures from Hoffer Plastics in the form of tamper-proof, strongly sealing spout caps; and manufactured with the mechanical integrity of the Mespack HF series fill and seal machine, which enables efficient filling through the spout of pre-made bags.

The new design offers 100% easy recyclability of the laminate and pouring cap, as well as within existing PP recycling streams and infrastructures. Manufactured at the UFlex India factory, these bags are exported to American markets and used for packaging edible products such as baby food, food puree, pet food, etc.

Thanks to the Mespack technology, the HF series is completely developed and constructed to work with recyclable materials, and the continuous filling through the spout reduces up to 15% of the head space by eliminating the wave effect.
